Stardust

Hey there. I'm back with my fifth book review. I'm very proud of how consistent I have been so far with reading a novel and reviewing it each month. The book "Stardust" by Neil Gaiman is a short fantasy story filled with beautiful attention to detail, mystical characters, and fascinating different point of views which all entwine together in the end. Since this is a fairly short read, I'll be keeping the book review short as well. I plan to read another book before the end of March, though. So stay tuned for another post! The image above is not my own.

Synopsis: A young Tristran Thorn, hopelessly in love and unknowing of the world around him, sets out to retrieve a fallen star for the girl he loves. In return she will give him what he wants: her hand in matrimony. Tristran makes his way past the Wall on a fantastical journey, meeting new friends along the way and escaping the claws of death multiple times. Then, he meets the star, and his desires begin to change.

Writing: 5/5

In one word: beautiful. The serious attention to detail and scenery was breathtaking. The author describes a beautiful fairie in such detail that I can imagine every inch of her during her scenes. I enjoyed the intense feeling of dread as the villains approached or were already within reach. The author did well portraying different emotions within each character from anger to lust and fear to hatred. I read multiple scenes over and over, including the scene with Dunstan and the pretty fairie girl.

Dialogue: 4/5

The dialogue was overall perfectly fine and well done. Some of the dialogue did come off as bland, but the detailed descriptions of scenery and actions made up for it. I thought Tristran's dialogue worked perfectly for his character. He was a silly boy in love, of course his wording would come off as ridiculous and immature at certain times.

Characters: 5/5

I loved every one of the characters in this story. They all had their role to play and they did it so well, I was enchanted the entire time. I also very much enjoyed how each of the characters related to each other in one way or another. All the antagonists had part in the stories of the protagonists. The sons of the king were all very interesting, and I think their part of the story is my favorite above all else.

Plot: 5/5

The plot was quite genius. Once again, I loved the fact that the stories of each character all entwined together. The whole plot of retrieving a fallen star in itself is interesting, and the author did well bringing the novel together.

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

I definitely loved reading this short book. I hope to read more of Neil Gaiman's works in the future!
